Who we are

Hey! We're Emily and Liz - nice to meet you!

We would love to make a record for you. And for us. And everybody, really! Here's how we got here:

In 2022, we formed LaPlant Road, a band name with an homage to our hometown of Grand Rapids, MN, where we were born and raised. Liz had the privilege of growing up on LaPlant Road (yes, it's an actual road!), just south of town, across the street from Lloyd LaPlant, Emily's grandfather. Lloyd was a luthier who built guitars and mandolins, and his home and workshop were a place for musicians from all over the country and globe to gather, fix up their instruments, and play tunes. Emily and Liz both grew up getting invited regularly to Lloyd's house for music jams. At an early age, Emily and Liz were exposed to some of the best and kindest bluegrass, blues, gospel, Appalachian, folk, French Canadian, and jazz artists from around the globe. We would sit in the dining room, where the acoustics were perfect, trying to pluck out notes of fiddle tunes and find the right chord voicing for all sorts of melodies while deer and coyotes roamed in the trees outside the window.

When we formed LaPlant Road, it was mostly, at first, to create a space for the both of us to be able to fully express ourselves as artists. We loved riffing off each other and building dynamics, intricate melodies, and tension with notes and sound. We began to write songs from some of our deepest losses and biggest joys. Soon, we began picking up traction, playing various festivals and shows around Northern Minnesota as well as the Twin Cities.

In 2025, we played a lot of shows and were able to meet so many new, friendly faces. We had the honor of interviewing with Lakeland PBS, playing on the Cedar Cultural Center stage, opening for Wild Horses, playing with Erik Koskinen, collaborating with the High 48's, being part of the Lakeside Guitar Festival, appearing on WCCO, and playing in front of the now 97-year-old Lloyd LaPlant, sharing the tunes that he taught us when we were just children. We began to think that maybe there was something to this LaPlant Road thing - something more than just a band who played cool licks; maybe we could make a record!

We chose to work with Pachyderm Studios for a few reasons. One, many of the people we admire and respect have done beautiful work there, and the reputation of the studio is solid. Two, after meeting with Nick Tveitbakk (producer and sound engineer), we were reminded that the only way to make this happen was if we had a team who valued collaboration. For us, LaPlant Road has always been more than just a duo: it's been a way for us to honor the community we came from and to share a sense of that community with the world. We were built from community, and in community we invest. Nick has a similar vision - it's much more about creating a product; it's about telling the story of the group and the sound. For us, our sound is generations old, interpreted in a new way by our ears and passions. It's a story and sound we believe Pachyderm will empower us to showcase well.

This is where you, dear reader, come in. We're guessing you've made it this far because you have some sort of vested interest or curiosity. And we want to meet you there. LaPlant Road is something that we are deeply proud of - that we desperately want to share with the world. The message of community, collaboration, and building something together has always been what our sound and story is about. We want to invite you to invest with us. Help us build something bigger than ourselves - something we can all take home at the end of the day and feel loved by.

Over the years, we've written a lot about grief, loss, hope, peace, humanity, and desire. We've collected niche songs that have spoken to us deeply, sometimes written by good friends of ours. We've decided we want to share those melodies, stories, and songs with you: not just in our live shows, but in something that you can take home with you - an art piece, and an homage to those who came before us as well as those in our community who have helped shaped us into the musicians and people we are today.

So here's the breakdown:
